Who cares for the poor?

I was recently accused of being selfish for pointing out that the government is a lousy help for the needy, gets in the way.

I was a missionary for about ten years, gave up that much of a career, we gave out food all over the poorest barrios in Santo Domingo. Poor in the U.S. don’t know what real poverty is. I’ve seen distended bellies.

But we did it with NOT ONE PENNY of your money. Robbing to “help the poor” is a conscience salve. The state (and the biggest demagogues) care NOTHING for the poor, just power.

That’s what disillusioned me with ALL the radical left leadership in the 1960s and 1970s.

Christians and conservatives show up as the most generous with donations in all the surveys. Mormons are especially good at taking care of their widows and orphans.

Christian missionaries were first on the scene after Hurricane Andrew in Homestead Florida. They were first and organized the chaotic distribution of help on the west coast of Florida during another recent hurricane landfall. Church buses from all over the country raced to New Orleans after Katrina, and the FEMA was the bad guys, stopping them, letting supplies rot and all that.

God help us if we have to depend on government for the hard times. They’re already bankrupt, they’ve run out of other people’s money.
