We have here an example of “Don’t confuse me with the facts!”
‘She is scheduled to tell delegates that the recent discovery of hundreds of planets around other stars has made the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before – and that means the UN must be ready to coordinate humanity’s response to any “first contact”….’
LOL. Every planet discovered so far –EVERY ONE– has been declared unfit for life, hostile to the development of life, by the same crowd that believes religiously in spontaneous abiogenesis. The one possible Earth-sized planet announced recently as “possibly” discovered is too close to its star for life.
So instead of making “the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before”, the fact is that ” the recent discovery of hundreds of planets around other stars” in reality –in the real world– makes it LESS likely given the knowledge we have now of planets around other stars.
And that’s without even considering what scientists already know about the optimum conditions for life, and the optimum conditions for observing the universe, and most importantly, the “optimum combination” of the two.
