Lucifer is Satan

I would be remiss if I did not share some of the things I’ve learned about the name in the title choice of one of those “chronicles of earlier libertarianism” of the 19th century, Lucifer the Light-Bearer. Wikipedia says he chose the name because “Lucifer, the ancient name of the Morning Star, now called Venus, seems to us unsurpassed as a cognomen for a journal whose mission is to bring light to the dwellers in darkness.”

It would not be the first time that history could inform us more than accepting prima facie someone’s declarations.

Traditionally, the name “Lucifer” has been known to be the original name of Satan, before his rebellion against God:

Isaiah 14:2 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

The confusion came when ALL the modern versions eliminated this the only mention of Satan as Lucifer in their versions of the Bible. For example, the NIV says that it was JESUS who was cast down from heaven in that same verse:

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! – Isaiah 14:12

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” –Revelation 22:16

This very question puzzled one Bible teacher so much she studied the Bible translations issues, resulting in her book “New Age Bible Versions”, where she dissipates confusion like this.

This is actually a libertarian issue, because even though it looks like an esoteric issue to libertarians who are not (yet?) Christians, and it was the Christian-apostate members of the “guiding hands” of “guided history” who made it the confusion that it is today.

it is the government-favored copyright-greedy Big Press that has pushed all these other versions into print. There are now more than one hundred English-language “translations” in English that purport to be “Bible translations”. Why so many? Because every one of them gets a “copyright”.

There is no lawful requirement that they be accurate in their translations, or that the assertions made in the source or target documents be accurate. BUT copyright law does require that each successive “translation” has to be at least 20% “different” from the original (I heard 10% once).

That means, say, one of them is 100% accurate. That means to make a profit 10% of each of the others have to be either wrong or a little bit wrong. A field day for Bible critics. “The children of this generation are wiser than the children of light” in many ways, and Christians fell for this bait-and-switch trick.

The formal translation philosophy means the KJB preserves little but important things. The Textus Receptus family of ancient documents is superior in many ways to the self-contradictory tiny set of the Alexandrian documents.

The Christian Establishment hates these facts and treats KJB champions with the disdain they have for “cults”. It loves government and war and is just as much a tool of the oppressors as the Republican Party Establishment candidates it enthusiastically and digustingly supports.

By the way, Lawrence Vance is an example of the very marked tendency among KJB readers to be rebels in terms of government obeisance.

By the way, I looked at the wikipedia entry for that publication and note that the name of the publication was changed to American Journal of Eugenics. I condemn the incarceration over an article at the same time I lament the choice of name.
